Yeast Allergy

The yeast is a form of fungi which is used in a lot of foods. Every day we intake quite a few types of foods which contain it as ingredient and we don’t even notice this. We barely can think about yeast allergy which occurs to a few people unfortunately. Although this is very rare among people but the severity can be mild up to severe upon the amount of consumption and the sensitivity of the person. We are possibly more familiar with the term yeast infection or in medical language it says Candidiasis. This fungal infection is found in both men and women. For women, this is called vulvovaginal infection. Yeast infection and allergy are quite different by their characteristics but the symptoms can be quite similar. The infection causes irritating vaginal problems which are experienced by women. It happens when yeast starts to overgrow in the gut which is known as “leaky gut syndrome”. In this process chemical imbalance occurs in the body which results overgrow of yeast.

When the sufferer ingests yeast containing foods, the immune system of the body reacts peculiarly rather than trying to absorb it. It suspects that the substance is harmful and thus release antibodies IgE to kill it. This antibody comes in contact with its protein and produces Histamine chemical which eventually goes into the bloodstream and cause yeast allergy. The infection can take up to a few days to show its impact but allergic reaction is usually severe and quick. Some of the common symptoms which are shown within 10 minutes are skin inflammation, hives, cough, wheezing etc. But yeast intolerance is slightly different in terms of the severity. The reaction is usually mild and it takes time before you feel any kind of adverse or negative effects. The reason of intolerance is also different.

This food ingredient food can be found both in natural and processed foods. The natural, baker’s or brewer’s yeast – all of them can trigger allergic reaction. You can feel the adverse reaction by consuming any of them. If you have problem to one of them, then there is a possibility that you are going to suffer from others as well. But this is not always true. Only the doctor can tell which form is creating problems to you after conducting medical tests. The baker’s yeast foods are normally baked foods and available in bread, cake, pasta, pizza, muffin, biscuits. Although while baking these foods, the yeast is outgrown but still the protein remains there which causes hypersensitivity. The brewer’s yeast is available beverages such as wine, soda, beer, alcohol, vinegar etc. These foods are not heated up during production and as a result the protein stays very much active in it.

How to Do Tests?

The prick test is a common one for yeast allergy. The test is very easy to conduct and does not hurt the patient at all. If you have already an appointment with the doctor, then the whole test will take only 30 minutes to an hour to complete including the full report. There is another way to detect the it and this is called elimination diet which is another effective way. The doctor can will decide which particular test to perform. Look for common symptoms such as skin rash, stomach cramp, diarrhea, itchiness, hives etc. If the symptoms come out, you will be marked as positive in the test. In some cases, the doctor suggests for the blood test which is used to confirm the existence of IgE immunoglobulin in the body.


There are various treatments for yeast allergy and it depends on your health condition. Sometime you can control it by preventing yeast containing foods from diet chart. At home, you can try with some pro-biotic food products such as yogurt. It contains live bacteria which can increase the volume of good bacteria when ingested in the intestines. This helps to balance out the microorganisms in the body which eventually helps to blow out yeast. The anti fungal drugs and creams should work for such allergy too. This has to be used orally and can be very useful for skin problems such as inflammation and rashes. You should find those pro-biotic foods and anti fungal cream at any grocery store or medical shop. Always take the prescription given by the doctor as in some occasions you might need to show it to the pharmacy in order to get medicines. Beside this all sugary and rich carbohydrate foods should be avoided at every stage. Initially, the antihistamine should do the work when the reaction is mild. The life threatening anaphylactic shock is the most severe condition which occurs very rarely. But you should always be careful and prepared enough to fight against it.
