Tree nut is regarded as the second most serious allergy after peanut allergy and almond falls under tree nuts. But it is surprising to know that almond belongs to the family Rosaceae which include fruits like apple, cherry, plum etc. This is not certain that everyone who is allergic to tree nuts are going to be suffering from almond allergy, but there is always a strong possibility for this to happen. If you are very sensitive to tree nuts, the suggestion is to avoid all types of nuts including walnuts and almond due to cross reactivity. Although tree nut allergy usually creates a strong reaction which can lead a sufferer to anaphylactic shock, there almond allergy has mild to severe symptoms such as hives, swelling, respiratory problem depending on the sensitivity and the amount of consumption. It is considered to be a lifelong allergy problem and equally common among babies and adults. Only a handful number toddlers can outgrow it in adulthood. There is no exact reason behind why only few people can do this and why the others can’t. The reaction can start within 15 minutes after consuming almond or related fruits within the same family.

The frequency of tree nut allergy is more than almond allergy which is rather unusual. The cross contamination issue is acute here and as a result you should be careful about similar fruits of almond. The birch pollen consists similar proteins which are available in almond too and thus almond should be prohibited for someone who is allergic to pollen. Unless an allergist does not suggest, a person should always avoid all types of nuts, when he has the hypersensitivity to almond due to cross contamination. Some of the other cross reactivity foods are peach and fruits from Rosaceae family. The almonds are used in a variety of foods or recipes as an ingredient. This may not be explicitly mentioned in label ingredients, so you must ask the manufacturer about it. It is most widely used in cakes, biscuits, breads, ice cream etc. It is not only the almond itself or something which is derived from it but the essence and flavor of it is equally harmful for someone who has been suffering from almond allergy. Some brands use fake flavor which does not include the real protein and thus don’t harm.

Almond Milk Allergy:

Almond milk is widely used as an alternative of cow milk due to several advantages. As this is low in fat and calories thus it is considered to be good for heart health. This is a great drink for them who are calorie concerned or over weight. At the same time it is rich in minerals and other nutrients. With so many positive sides, this is a useful drink for those who are not comfortable with cow milk. But if almond triggers a hypersensitivity to you, then it is better to avoid it. Even those who have milk allergies, should keep a distance from almond milk as well. You must not treat it as an alternative of breast milk for infants.

Almond Butter Allergy:

Almond butter is made by crushing or grinding real almonds into paste. This is high in nutrients. One can get vitamin E, potassium, iron, calcium from it. It is rich in fiber and protein. But some people unfortunately can’t consume or digest it due to intolerance or allergic problem. For them, almond butter should not be included in diet chart. It can create a severe allergic reaction after consumptions.

Almond Allergy Symptoms:

These are some of the typical symptoms of almond allergy. You always should prefer to contact a doctor and conduct medical tests in prior of taking any treatment to alleviate allergy problem.

  • Asthma
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Diarrhea
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramp
  • Swelling and tingling around mouth, throat
  • Vomiting
  • Wheezing

Tests and Treatment:

The skin test should be conducted under supervision of an allergist. During the test, you may be offered to eat something which contain almonds. If you are allergic to it, the symptoms will be shown within few minutes approximately 10 to 15. If this happens then you are definitely positive to almond allergy. After this doctor will prescribe the medicines depending on the severity. At the same time, you have to be cautions to consume a food which contains almonds.  Anything derived from almond should be restricted such as almond oil or skin care products such as shampoo, lotion or cream. A lot of pharmaceutical products are made with almonds these days. The environment you are living it should be free from almonds as well. If this continuously becomes the reason for severe reactions, then try to keep at least a dose of epinephrine injection. This injection can save life when there is no one beside you to help. But some time the patient does not remain in a position during anaphylaxis to help himself and thus someone else from family or friends circle needs to step up and shoot the injection.
